It is important to have
the water tested in your new home, especially if the home is on
a well. City water is maintained by the city, there is not much
of a chance of city water being contaminated by bacteria or nitrates.
However I have found that city water is hard. Hard water can cause
damage to the plumbing pipes and appliances. It is also hard on
clothing and can cause skin itch. I carry a test kit with me and
would be happy to test the water in your new home for hardness at
no charge.
Well Water: Well water should
be tested annually for bacteria and nitrates. Coliform bacteria
is the bacteria most commonly associated with water quality. The
Environmental Protection Agency standard for acceptable drinking
water is a total Coliform count of zero. Coliform bacteria are a
large group of various bacteria. They include bacteria that occur
naturally in the intestines of warm-blooded animals (Fecal Coliform)
and Non-Fecal Coliform bacteria. Fecal Coliforms can include disease
causing species. E. Coli often listed in water quality analyses
is one species of Fecal Coliform bacteria. Their presence in a water
sample indicates that sewage material may be present and if sewage
is present more harmful diseases may be present. Nitrates: Although
low levels of nitrates occur naturally in water, sometimes higher
levels which are potentially dangerous to some infants are discovered.
Wisconsin has adopted a drinking water standard of 10 milligrams
per liter (10 MG/L) for Nitrate. This standard is mandatory for
public water supplies and is used as a guide for private water supplies.
We have been certified by METS Laboratories to collect water samples.
This is your assurance that the water test has been performed by
a professional.
